PART SEVEN
END
John drew his work to a conclusion by restating the Lord’s words and warnings. Revelation’s last two chapters contained two parallel sections with near-identical words and promises.
TRUE AND TRUSTFUL
Revelation 21:5b ∥ 22:6-11
(21:5b) And he says to me, “Write, because these words are true and trustful.”
∥
(22:6) And he said to me, “These words are trustful and true. And the LORD God of the spirits of the prophets delegated his angel to show his slaves what must happen soon.”
(22:7) “Lo, I am coming without delay! Fortunate is the one keeping the words of the prophecy in this book.”
(22:8) And I, John, was the one seeing and hearing these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to prostrate myself in homage at the feet of the angel who showed me these things, (22:9) and he said to me, “Take heed, no! For I am your co-slave, and of your brothers the prophets, and of those keeping the words of this book. Prostrate yourself in homage to God.”
(22:10) And he says to me, “Do not seal the words of the prophecy of this book, because the time is near. (22:11) The one acting wrongly, let him act wrongly; and the filthy, let him still be filthy; and the just, let still be justified; and the holy, let still be holy.”
And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth, these shall awake to life everlasting, and these to shame and everlasting contempt.
Daniel 12:2
Daniel was told to seal his book (Daniel 12:4), because the time for its fulfilment was very far away, but John was told to not seal his book, because its fulfilment was near. Since John wrote his book in AD 96, the fulfilment was hardly “near,” and yet, it was not so far away when it is considered that the 70th Week of Babylon began less than 300 years after Revelation was written, which in the great scheme of things, was not far from his day.
“Trustful and true” was a repeat of the titles for the Lord in Revelation 3:14 and 19:11. He is trustful and true, the same as his words.
ALPHA AND OMEGA
Revelation 21:6-7 ∥ 22:12-14
(21:6) And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Commencement and the Completion. To the one thirsting I will freely give the spring of the water of life. (21:7) The one subduing will inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he will be my child.”
∥
(22:12) “And lo, I am coming shortly, and my due reward is with me, to give back to each, according to his works. (22:13) I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Commencement and the Completion, the First and the Last. (22:14) Fortunate are those who wash their robes, that they will have the authority over the tree of life, and to the gates, so they may enter into the city.”
Dearly beloved, we are now children of God, and it was not yet revealed what we will be, but know that if he is revealed, we will be similar to him, for we will see him as he is. And everyone having this expectation in him purifies himself, just as that one is pure.
1 John 3:2-3
Another title for the Lord was repeated here. The Commencement is the same as Revelation 3:13, “the Commencement of the creation of God.” This is the only place where he uses the term the Completion as a title, and it is fitting that it is given at the end of Revelation. He is the Word of God who brought creation into being, and he is also the means for its end. The salvation plan of God will be completed by Jesus.
BUT OUTSIDE
Revelation 21:8 ∥ 22:15
(21:8) “But for the timid and unbelieving and the detestable and murderers and fornicators and sorcerers and idolaters and all the lying-ones, their share is in the lake burning with fire and sulphur, which is the second death.”
∥
(22:15) “But outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the fornicators and the murderers and the idolaters and everyone having love for and making falsehood.”
Look out for the dogs, look out for workers of wrong-doing.
Philippians 3:2a
Or do you not know that the unjust-ones will not inherit the kingdom of God? Don’t be led astray. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor transsexuals, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunks, nor the abusive, nor plunderers will inherit the kingdom of God. And some of you were these. But you were washed, you were made holy, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the spirit of our God. To me everything is permitted, but not everything is helpful. To me everything is permitted, but nothing will put me under its authority.
1 Corinthians 6:9-12
JESUS THE HOPE FOR THE WORLD
When Jesus returns to rule as King, he will restore the world. There is no future without him. As each year passes while we wait for the King, as each generation comes and goes, the evil in the world increases. Now that we find ourselves in the early 21st Century, when communication has become so easy, hardly any of the world’s secrets can continue to be kept from our eyes. This fulfils Daniel 12:4 that says that at the “time of the end many will increase their knowledge.” This knowledge is vital to our understanding of the world today, and we need to heed the warning of Hosea 4:6 that, “my people are destroyed by lack of knowledge.”
We now know the secrets of those who work for the Devil, who carefully guarded their plans decided in their protected palaces and private chambers, and how they thought that their darkness would never be exposed to the light. An increasing number of people are coming to the truth, both believers and unbelievers, both the lost and the found. They can now identify the evil people for who they really are, and they are fearlessly revealing their plans to the world. Many more will follow them, and come to see that the world is truly in the grip of the Evil One (1 John 5:19). This is what the Lord promised, written in Luke 8:17, “For nothing is private which will not be public; nor kept secret which will not be known and come to be made public.”
It has become increasingly apparent that the forces of evil are dedicated to the insane destruction of everything; the people, the animals, and even the planet itself. After centuries of wanton destruction, now more prevalent than at any other time in history, it can scarcely be imagined that God the Father will allow many more years to pass without our Lord Jesus returning.
When he does intervene, he will change peoples’ hearts. They will live in peace. Strife and conflict leading to death will cease. War and the spilling of innocent blood will cease. Blind hatred of people who have different beliefs or cultures, or even because they have different faces, will cease. No more children and babies killed to make heartless war profiteers richer. No more deliberate spreading of disease and illness to make the cruel health merchants richer. All of those things will disappear. No more lies about the origins of life that hides behind the guise of science. No more mockery of the truth. No more denial of the existence and greatness of God. Everything that dishonours God will never be seen again. All blasphemies will disappear. All monuments of men decorated with symbols of the Devil will be turned to dust.
When God first raised his hands to judge the world, everything created by man in the days of Noah was destroyed; totally wiped away without a trace. It is unlikely that this current world will face complete destruction, since we know that there will be survivors, the “sheep,” who will live on in the Messianic Kingdom, so there must be some part of the 21st Century that will remain.
This is worth repeating: There will continue to be kings in the world, for he is the King of kings, and they will have their own nations. Will they be the same nations of today, or will they be new creations? How much of today’s culture will remain? How much of it is worthy, and how much of it is worthless? Only what is good and what is pure will remain to be a part of his Kingdom, for that is what is from God. As Paul said in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is inspiring of reverence, whatever just, whatever pure, whatever acceptable, whatever of good repute, if any virtue and any praise, reckon on these things.”
END
Revelation 22:16-21
(22:16) I, Jesus, sent my angel to testify this to you over the Assemblies. I am the Root and the Kin of David, the Radiant Morning Star.”
(22:17) And the spirit and the bride say, “Come!”
And he hearing, let him say, “Come!”
And he thirsting, let him come. And he wanting, let him freely take the water of life. (22:18) For I jointly testify to everyone hearing the words of the prophecy in this book: If anyone imposes on these things, God will impose to him the calamities having been written in this book. (22:19) And if anyone takes away from the words of the prophecy in this book, God will take away his share from the tree of life and of the holy city, and of the things having been written in this book.
(22:20) The one testifying these things says, “Yes! I am coming shortly!”
Amen! Yes, come, Lord Jesus.
(22:21) The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you all.
You shall not add to the word which I command you, not take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. . . . Whatever thing I command, you be careful to observe it. You shall not add to it, nor take away from it.
Deuteronomy 4:2; 12:32
For at this time we look obscurely in a mirror, but at that time face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will fully recognise, just as I was fully recognised.
1 Corinthians 13:12
The same spirit bears witness together with our spirit, that we are children of God. And if children, also heirs; truly heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ; if indeed we suffer together, that we may also be glorified together.
Romans 8:17
I will be their God and they will be my people.
Jeremiah 31:33b
. . . knowing this firstly, that no prophecy of scripture came to be on its own interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but coming by the Holy Spirit, the holy people of God spoke.
2 Peter 1:20-21
“But when I speak to you, I will open your mouth and you will say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord the LORD, he who hears let him hear, and he who refuses, let him refuse, for they are a rebellious house.’”
Ezekiel 3:27
“For the Son of Man is about to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will return to each according to his deeds.”
Matthew 16:27
“And if those days were not shortened, not any flesh would be saved. But on account of the select, those days will be shortened.”
Matthew 24:22
