PART TWO
THE TRUE CHURCH & THE FAKE
The Seven Churches represent the entire True Church (those who truly believe and are truly the Lord’s people), the good and the bad, reflecting the tribulations experienced by every Christian: Persecution from those outside, persecution from those within, compromise, temptation, false leaders, false teachings, dullness, religiosity. But there are also the hard workers, the courageous, the faithful, the caring, the genuine, the loving.
And yet, under the surface there is far more to these symbols. We find links to the Two Witnesses and the Measuring of the Temple, and also to the mysterious 144,000. Deeper still, there is a beautiful connection between the True Church and the Old Testament story of Ruth and Boaz. We also find connection with the Holy Jerusalem in Revelation 21 & 22, which again is a picture of the True Church.(29)
Apart from brief summaries for each city, there is no need for this book to dwell on their histories. Other Bible studies, and even tour guides, have plenty to say about the surviving ruins, and the people, and the cultures of these cities. Most of these details are irrelevant to a prophetic study of how Revelation relates to today’s modern world and the coming Second Parousia.

The following is the twelve divisions of the Seven Letters. Clues are sprinkled throughout the Old Testament connecting the Twelve Tribes of Israel to the Seven Churches. These are found either in direct prophecy given about a tribe, or in the life of a member or founder of that tribe.(30)
1) Enduring Ephesus (2:2-3)
2) Fallen Ephesus (2:4-6)
3) Suffering Smyrna (2:9-10)
4) Persecuted Pergamum (2:13)
5) False Pergamum (2:14-16)
6) Loving Thyatira (2:19)
7) Sinful Thyatira (2:20-23)
8) Burdened Thyatira (2:24-25)
9) Sleeping Sardis (3:1b-3)
10) Spotless Sardis (3:4)
11) Faithful Philadelphia (3:8-11)
12) Lukewarm Laodicea (3:15-20)
Footnote
29. If there is another teaching that does not remove the Seven Letters from the rest of Revelation, and teach them as having separate meanings, this author is unaware. As far as can be determined, every book and teaching excludes the Seven Letters, and is quite dismissive of their importance. The most common view is that each church represents a time in history. This appears to have begun in the Historicist camp, but has been adopted by Idealists (unless it is the view that it is the Church in general) and Futurists. Thus, Ephesus represents Christians up to AD 100, Smyrna to AD 313, Pergamum to AD 600, Thyatira to 1500, Sardis to 1700, and then Philadelphia supposedly, before the 19th Century, who gained favour due to their missionary and evangelical mindset, while the 19th, 20th, and 21st Century Church is spiritually lukewarm and in need of rebuke. While this appears to work relatively well for readers who lived in the past couple of centuries, it would have been an entirely ridiculous idea to anyone who lived in the centuries immediately after the time of John, and renders this part of Revelation as irrelevant. The worst idea of all is that it represents seven literal churches at the time of John, a view held by Preterists (but also some Futurists and Idealists), making none of it relevant to our time, or anyone living after John’s time. Taking a slightly better approach, most Idealists portray the Seven Letters as representing any church at any time. Futurists, however, feel free to pick and choose from what is taught by Historicists, Idealists, and even Preterists.
30. Nicknames are given for each group and they are not meant to be anything more than that.
TO EPHESUS
Revelation 2:1
(2:1) “To the angel of the Assembly in Ephesus, write: These are the words of the one holding the seven stars in his right hand, the one walking among the seven golden lampstands.”
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. And I give them everlasting life; and in no way will they perish forever, and no one will snatch them away out of my hand.”
John 10:27-28
Ephesus was the largest city of Asia Minor, with a flourishing seaport. Its well-preserved ruins exist today as a popular tourist attraction. It was the home of John when he was in old age. According to Irenaeus, John remained passionate about the faith and opposing heretics:
There are also those who heard . . . that John, the disciple of the Lord, going to bathe at Ephesus, and perceiving [the Gnostic] Cerinthus within, rushed out of the bath-house without bathing, exclaiming, “Let us fly, lest even the bath-house fall down, because Cerinthus, the enemy of the truth, is within.”
Irenaeus, Against Heresies, 3, 3, 4
The Ephesian people were noted for their devoted love of Paul when he departed from them for the last time (Acts 19:36-37).
ENDURING EPHESUS
Revelation 2:2-3
(2:2) “I know your works and your labour, and your patient-perseverance, and that you cannot bear wrong-doers, and that you tested those professing to be delegates and are not, and have found them to be deceitful. (2:3) And you have endured and have patient-perseverance, and for the sake of my name you have worked hard and have not tired.”
. . . constantly remembering your work of faith, and labour of love, and patient-perseverance of expectation in our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father.
1 Thessalonians 1:3
ENDURING EPHESUS & JUDAH
The first Church group Enduring Ephesus equates with the first and most important tribe of Judah and King David. We have a very good idea of David’s character from the many psalms he wrote, as he poured out his feelings about his God and the world around him. The words in his psalms were remarkably similar to the Christians who belong to Enduring Ephesus: I know your works, and your labour, and your patient-perseverance. David wrote:
Because for your sake I suffer disgrace. Shame has covered my face. . . . And when I wept in my soul with fasting, it became my disgrace, and I made a garment of sackcloth, and I became their proverb. Speak against me, those who sit in the gate, and I am the song of drunkards.
Psalm 69:7, 10-12
Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my anxieties, and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.
Psalm 139:23-24
I cried out to you, LORD. I said, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living. Heed to my cry, for I am very brought down. Deliver me from my persecutors, for they are stronger than me. Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise your name.”
Psalm 142:5-7a
For the enemy has persecuted my soul, he has crushed my life to the ground, he has made me dwell in darkness like those who have been long dead.
Psalm 143:3
Comparing equally well are the following: and that you cannot bear wrong-doers (see Psalm 28:3-5; 52:1-7; 58:2-9; 64:2-8; 101:3-5; 139:19-22; 140:1-11; 141:4-7), and that you tested those professing to be delegates and are not, and have found them to be deceitful (see Psalm 12:1-4; 63:11), and you have endured and have patient-perseverance, and for the sake of my name you have worked hard and have not tired (see Psalm 63:1-6; 143:11a).
FALLEN EPHESUS
Revelation 2:4-6
(2:4) “But I have against you that you remitted your first love. (2:5) Remember, then, from where you have fallen, and repent, and do the first works. And if not, I am coming to you without delay and will move your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. (2:6) Yet what you have is this, that you detest the works of the Nicolaitans,(31) which I also detest.”
. . . having condemnation because they set aside their foremost faith.
1 Timothy 5:12
FALLEN EPHESUS & MANASSEH
The most famous descendant from Manasseh, the “weakest clan,” was Gideon (Judges 6:15), a man who followed down the same slippery slope as Fallen Ephesus: You remitted your first love. Remember, then, from where you have fallen, and repent, and do the first works. Gideon was a man who was at first determined to do what God wanted, and only what God wanted. His life was told in Judges 6:1-8:35, and it was one of absolute obedience to God, because his love and faith were so great. Everything was going wonderfully well for Gideon, until one day, following his own plan and not God’s, he made a gold ephod, which was a garment or an idol used for worship. This ephod caused a false religion that Gideon, apparently innocently commissioned, and it caused terrible backsliding from God; not only for Gideon and his family, but for everyone in Israel.
And the weight of the gold earrings that he requested was 1,700 gold shekels, besides the ornaments and pendants, and purple robes that were on the Midian kings, and besides the chains that were around their camels’ necks. And Gideon made it into an ephod, and set it up in his city Ophrah, and all Israel prostituted with it, and it became a snare to Gideon and to his house.
Judges 8:26-27
This snare that caught Gideon should serve as a warning to Christians, that just because something may appear to be harmless, or even honouring God, that does not mean it is harmless, and may instead give honour to the god of this world. Even the smallest snare, even after many years of faithful service, can cause anyone to stumble, as with Gideon.
31. No one knows who the Nicolaitans were, but this has not stopped many from guessing, or inventing, that they were followers of a man named Nicolaus. Even if this is true, we are still back with the problem of knowing nothing about him, other than he was a heretic.
REWARD FOR EPHESUS
Revelation 2:7
(2:7) “The one having an ear, hear what the spirit says to the Assemblies. To the one subduing, I will give to him to eat from the tree of life which is within the paradise of God.”
And the LORD God said, “Behold, Adam has become like us, knowing good and evil, lest he reaches out his hand and also take from the tree of life and live forever.” So the LORD God sent him out of the Garden of Eden to till the ground from which he had been taken.
Genesis 3:22-23
For if by the transgression of the one, death ruled through the one, much more those who are accepting the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will rule in life through the one, Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:17
As the Seven Letters describe the True Church, there are also many references to Holy Jerusalem. Connecting Ephesus with Holy Jerusalem is: “the tree of life was on either side of the river, producing twelve fruits, yielding fruit according to each month” (22:2), and I will give to him to eat from the tree of life.
TO SMYRNA
Revelation 2:8
(2:8) “And to the angel of the Assembly in Smyrna, write: The First and the Last says these things, who became dead and lived.”
“. . . whom God raised up, having loosened the sorrows of death, because it was not possible for him to be retained by it.”
Acts 2:24
The port city Smyrna is now Izmir, a large and important city in Turkey. It is a city so old that the date of its founding is unknown. In John’s time, Smyrna was noted for its beauty, and it flourished as a commercial centre. Despite its prominence, it was not mentioned anywhere else in the Bible apart from Revelation, and it seems that the Apostle Paul never visited the Christians there. The bishop of Smyrna in the early 2nd Century AD was the famous Polycarp.
SUFFERING SMYRNA
Revelation 2:9-10
(2:9) “I know of your trouble and poverty, but you are wealthy! And the abuse of those calling themselves Jews but are nothing but a synagogue of Satan. (2:10) Do not be frightened of what you are about to suffer. Lo, the Devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and ten days you will have trouble. Be trustful even to death, and I will give you the wreath of life.”
Fortunate is the man who perseveres in trial; because having been approved, he will receive the wreath of life which the Lord promised to those loving him.
James 1:12
SUFFERING SMYRNA & JOSEPH
In the letter to Smyrna we have an almost precise recount of the life story of Joseph (see Genesis 37, 39-50). It is so remarkably similar that it may be the answer to the puzzling question of why the tribe of Joseph was listed in Revelation 7:5-8 along with the tribe that split from Joseph and was named after his son Manasseh.(32)
“I know of your trouble and poverty, but you are wealthy!” Joseph suffered trouble when his bitter and jealous brothers threw him into an empty well, intending to leave him there to die. They changed their minds and rescued him, but after a while they again decided to get rid of him by selling him to passing travellers. That way they would get some money out of him. Many years later, they were so guilty over how they treated him that they were terrified that he was going to kill them. But Joseph, great man of God that he was, had forgiven them.
Joseph became a slave and ended up in Egypt, a place where slaves were sometimes forced to build things like giant pyramids. This was the poverty. But as seen by his forgiving of his brothers’ cruel treatment, he remained spiritually strong, and God was with him; but you are wealthy!
“And the abuse of those calling themselves Jews.” Joseph’s brothers secretly split the money between themselves and put together a story of how he was killed. They convinced their father Jacob that Joseph had been torn apart by a wild animal. Jacob was so upset that he wanted to die; and all of his family, including the lying brothers, tried to comfort him but could not. It was by his reaction that they must have realised the full consequences of what they had done.
“Do not be frightened of what you are about to suffer. Lo, the Devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and ten days you will have trouble.” Joseph was put in prison even though he had committed no crime. It was not revealed exactly how long Joseph remained in the prison, but ten years would probably be about the right time, as a simile of the ten days in the message to Smyrna. When he was taken to Egypt he was aged seventeen, but when he was released he was thirty. That would leave him about three years as a servant in the house of Potiphar, which is entirely feasible, as when he left he had already become the head servant and had control over their food supply.

“Be trustful even to death, and I will give you the wreath of life.” Through every trial, Joseph remained faithful to God, and was rewarded by being made the second-most-powerful man in all of Egypt, and therefore the whole of the ancient world. He had complete control over the food distribution to the starving people. To the Egyptians, and everyone else who went to him for food, including his brothers, he was the source of life.
Footnote
32. As the years went by, the list of tribes changed, but what is found in Revelation 14 contradicts what is found in the Old Testament.
REWARD FOR SMYRNA
Revelation 2:11
(2:11) “The one having an ear, hear what the spirit says to the Assemblies. The one subduing will not be wronged by the second death.”
The True Church will be part of the First Resurrection, which is where we find a connection with Smyrna: The one subduing will not be wronged by the second death, and “the second death has no authority over them” (20:6b).
TO PERGAMUM
Revelation 2:12
(2:12) “And to the angel of the Assembly in Pergamum, write: These things says he having the sharp double-edged sword.”
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
Isaiah 11:4b
Pergamum (also called Pergamon or Pergamos) is now called Bergama, and is about eighty kilometres north of Izmir. It was known to be a stronghold for pagan religions, and it had an enormous altar to the Greek god Zeus atop the prominent hill next to the city. Pergamum was also famous for being the home of Aesclapis, a god of medicine, whose symbol was a serpent. The fame of its healing power brought in many visitors from distant lands. By AD 96 a new religion had arrived, that of emperor worship. No wonder the city was described as the place where Satan lives and has his throne.
PERSECUTED PERGAMUM
Revelation 2:13
(2:13) “I know where you reside, where the throne of Satan is. And you retain my name and did not deny your faith in me, even in the days when Antipas, my trustful witness, was killed near you, where Satan resides.”
For I have been persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor powers, nor things present nor things about to be, nor height nor depth, nor any other creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39
PERSECUTED PERGAMUM & GAD
Gad was one of those tribes in which almost nothing is known and it had no famous descendants. What we do have is a clue given by Jacob when he prophesied over his sons just before he died.
Gad, raiders will invade, but he will attack their heels.
Genesis 49:19
That is what turned out to be the history of the tribe of Gad. Their land was on the eastern side of the river Jordan, and was therefore very open to enemy attack. That is the same way of life that the Christians of Persecuted Pergamum have to bear. The threat of martyrdom hangs over them because they are living in, or are very close to, enemy territory, but they will eventually triumph.
FALSE PERGAMUM
Revelation 2:14-16
(2:14) “But I have a few things against you, for some of you have retained the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to throw a tripping-up before the sons of Israel, to eat idolatrous offerings and to commit fornication. (2:15) So you also have those retaining the teaching of the Nicolaitans. (2:16) Repent! But if not, I will come to you without delay, and will make war with them by the sword of my mouth.”
Abandoning the straight way, they roamed, following in the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the due reward of wrongfulness.
2 Peter 2:15
FALSE PERGAMUM & LEVI
This Church group links with the tribe of Levi through the actions of Aaron, who was the first High Priest of Israel. All the priests who came after him could only be Levites, but the High Priest also had to be directly descended from Aaron. The foolish mistake that Aaron made when his younger brother Moses left him in charge of the Israelites for a little while (Exodus 32), links him with the failings of False Pergamum. Aaron weakly gave in to the people’s rebellious demands, and turned from God to build a pagan idol, a golden calf. Burnt sacrifices were then given to the idol, and a drunken and immoral festival celebrated it. The height of their stupidity was when they claimed that the idol was what had brought them out of Egypt.
God was ready to wipe them all out for doing this, and start a new people with Moses (Exodus 32:10), and the same is what was warned will happen to False Pergamum, should they fail to repent: I will come to you without delay, and will make war with them by the sword of my mouth. It was the same rebellion committed by the Israelites under Aaron’s guidance: to eat idolatrous offerings and to commit fornication.
Although they rebelled against God, all he asked for was their repentance. He is willing to forgive past sins if we repent of them. To those who come out of the trap of False Pergamum, his free gifts are still available, as seen in what the Lord promised after he gave the warnings: I will give him hidden manna to eat (2:17). Those who repented from the rebellion of Aaron’s golden calf were also freely given manna from Heaven.
REWARD FOR PERGAMUM
Revelation 2:17
(2:17) “The one having an ear, hear what the spirit says to the Assemblies. To the one subduing, I will give him hidden manna to eat, and I will give to him a white pebble, and on the pebble a brand-new name written which no one knows except the one receiving it.”
Every good act of giving and every complete gift is descending from heaven, from the Father of Lights.
James 1:17a
The connection between Pergamum and Holy Jerusalem is in the white pebble, which indicates a precious stone, and a new name written on it. Holy Jerusalem will have foundations of “every valuable stone” (21:19), and the city gates and walls have “names inscribed” (21:12, 14).
Manna was called “bread from heaven,” and “grain” (Psalm 78:24). “The people of Israel called it manna, and it was white like coriander seed, and tasted like wafers made with honey” (Exodus 16:31). The Book of Numbers added that it was also the colour of bdellium resin (Numbers 11:7).
TO THYATIRA
Revelation 2:18
(2:18) “And to the angel of the Assembly in Thyatira, write: These things says the Son of God, he having eyes as a flame like fire, and his feet are like fine brass.”
She says to him, “Yes, Lord. I have trusted that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who comes into the world.”
John 11:27
Today the town Akhisar has been built over Thyatira’s ruins. Its fame to the ancient world was for its trade in dyeing purple, which was expensive and therefore very esteemed to wear. The Christian woman Lydia who was converted by Paul (Acts 16:14-15) came from Thyatira, and was a dealer in their lucrative trade.
LOVING THYATIRA
Revelation 2:19
(2:19) “I know your works, and love and service and faith and patient-perseverance, and your works, the last more than the first.”
“Nor do they light a lamp and place it under a bushel, but on the lampstand, and it shines for all those in the house. In this way let your light shine before people, so that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father in the heavens.”
Matthew 5:15-16
There are three prophetic groups found in the letter to Thyatira. The first, Loving Thyatira, links with the third, Burdened Thyatira.
SINFUL THYATIRA
Revelation 2:20-23
(2:20) “But I have a few things against you; you permit the woman Jezebel, the one calling herself a prophetess, to teach and to lead my slaves astray to commit fornication and to eat idolatrous offerings. (2:21) I gave her time that she might repent of her fornication, but she did not repent. (2:22) Lo, I am throwing her, and those committing adultery with her, onto a bed of great trouble, unless they repent of her works. (2:23) And I will kill her children with death, and all the Assemblies will know that I am the one investigating the innermost-minds and hearts. I will give to you each according to your works.”
“I, the LORD, search the heart and test the mind, even to give to each one according to their ways, according to the fruit of their deeds.”
Jeremiah 17:10
SINFUL THYATIRA & REUBEN
This Church group links with the tribe of Reuben through their common sin of committing adultery. The tribe got away to a bad start with their founder Reuben, who was Jacob’s first son, but after he had a sexual relationship with his father’s concubine Bilhah (Genesis 35:22), he was removed from the promised blessings of the first son. It also influenced Jacob’s prophecy over Reuben (Genesis 49:3-4), and the tribe that should have been the most important was replaced by the tribe of Judah. By this one sin, many people suffered a curse instead of what should have been blessings. As a result, the tribe of Reuben became unstable and weak, and it never excelled in anything through the entire history of Israel.
The group of Sinful Thyatira is under a similar threat, that they will also lose their inheritance should they not repent in the time still remaining. It is also likely that there is a prophetic meaning to this passage, that the problem is being tempted by spiritual adultery, which is in following a faith other than that given to us by the Lord through the Holy Spirit. The inclusion of the woman Jezebel, the one calling herself a prophetess, is a reference to the time when Elijah battled with a priestess of Baal named Jezebel. This woman led astray many people in Israel, including King Ahab, and they left their former faith and went to another, where they ate idolatrous offerings.
And it happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, “Are you this troubler of Israel?” And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you, and your father’s house, because you have forsaken the commands of the LORD, and followed the Baals. Now, then, send out and gather all Israel to me on Mount Carmel, and four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and four hundred prophets of Asherah who eat at the table of Jezebel.”
1 Kings 18:17-19
The Baal cult was particularly nasty because it featured the sacrifice by fire of the worshippers’ children. Although it can be difficult to believe, such demonic practices are still secretly performed today, in this modern world.(33) It can be even more difficult to believe that those who do so, also pretend to be Christian, and belong to a church that calls itself Christian, to fool those who attend, who do not know that they are following the Jezebel spirit. The human abuse and sacrifice ritual is this spirit in its most extreme and repulsive form.
This fake Jezebel Christianity is, at the very least, full of doctrines and traditions that only serve to separate people from God. In Revelation this fake Christianity is called the Harlot (17:1) and Babylon the Great (17:5), and it stands in opposition to the true believers, the True Church, who are the Bride of Christ (21:2). The Harlot has children as deceitful as her (she is called “the mother of harlots” in 17:5), and with harsh words, the Lord promises that he will kill her children with death. Sinful Thyatira follow the false doctrines of the Harlot, and whether it is done willingly or through deceit, they are instructed by the Lord to repent.
Footnote
33. Even by a conservative estimate, provided by government statistics, in excess of one million children go missing every year throughout the world. This number is probably too low since many countries refuse to provide any statistics about missing children. Witnesses and survivors state that there is an industry in children that is run by military, criminal organisations, so-called government intelligence services, and religious institutions. True believers who endorse and partake of churches that are secretly part of this modern Baal cult need to leave them.
BURDENED THYATIRA
Revelation 2:24-25
(2:24) “But to the rest of you at Thyatira, those who do not have this teaching and who do not know ‘the mysteries of Satan’ (as they say), I am not throwing another burden on you; (2:25) only hold on to what you have until I will arrive.”
Test all things. Hold fast to the good. Refrain from every form of evil.
1 Thessalonians 5:21-22
The ‘mysteries of Satan’ was a good description of Gnosticism, which taught that there were hidden mystical secrets behind the words of Scripture, and that the truth was found in those secrets instead of what was plainly written. They said that those who preferred to read the plain text were unenlightened, and had no real understanding. The Gnostic teachers from the late 1st Century AD onward, claimed that Jesus was not really a man at all, but a spirit who only looked like a man, which is why John opposed them by saying, “Because many deceivers went out into the world, those not confessing Jesus Christ coming in the flesh; this is the deceiver and the Antichrist” (2 John 7). Many Early Christian leaders associated the Gnostics with Simon Magus, who was a man who saw Christianity as a way to make himself wealthy (Acts 8:9-24). According to Irenaeus, they were also into “dark arts” and sorcery in order to fool people.
Moreover, those also will be thus confuted who belong to Simon [Magus] and Carpocrates, and if there be any others who are said to perform miracles, who do not perform what they do either through the power of God, or in connection with the truth, nor for the well-being of men, but for the sake of destroying and misleading mankind, by means of magical deceptions, and with universal deceit, thus entailing greater harm than good on those who believe them, with respect to the point on which they lead them astray.
Irenaeus, Against Heresies, 2, 31, 2
A mild form of the deceptive teaching techniques used by the Gnostics are favoured today (probably innocently) by preachers and evangelists. They will first read a text from the Bible, then describe the Hebrew or Greek word in detail, and slowly move through root words and connected words, until they find a word that corresponds with what they want to discuss. By that time, most people would have forgotten what the original quoted text was.(34) They do not realise that they were manipulated into believing that what was plainly written was not what it “really” means, but they have become “enlightened.” It also should be noted that many such teachers will also try to use “signs and wonders” with their ministry, to further push their spiritual validity, and pad their wallets.
Footnote
34. This author once heard a man teach on what the phrase “by their fruit you will know them” (Mat 7:20) really means. According to him, the word “fruit” meant “seed” because all fruit contain seeds, and therefore the phrase should be “by their seeds you will know them,” so we should look to the origins of false teachers, not by what they produce, which was the exact opposite of what the Lord said. See how they can alter any text that they want, by simply discussing the “deeper meaning of the words, even to the extent of changing that meaning by 180 degrees? A good question for that teacher is that if the Lord meant to say “seed,” then why did he not say “seed”?
THYATIRA & NAPHTALI AND ZEBULUN
The first group from this church, Loving Thyatira, shares with Burdened Thyatira the same prophecy that connects the two tribes Naphtali and Zebulun. Those two tribes were sited next to each other on the west shore of the Sea of Galilee. The Lord lived in the Galilean city of Capernaum, “by the sea, in the borders of Zebulun and Naphtali, that may be fulfilled that spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, ‘Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people sitting in darkness saw a great light, and those sitting in the region and shadow of death, light arose up to them’” (Matthew 4:14-16).
The Isaiah prophecy quoted by Matthew continued about the Messiah:
For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on his shoulder, and his name will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6
Connecting to Thyatira:
“For you have broken the burden of his yoke and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.”
Isaiah 9:4
The shattering of the oppressors and the Lord claiming his rightful throne, from where he will rule the nations, was also prophesied in the second psalm:
“And yet, I have set my king on Zion my holy hill. I will declare the decree, the LORD has said to me, Today you are my son. Ask of me, and I will give you the Gentiles for your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for your possession. You will break them with a rod of iron, you will shatter them like earthen vessels.”
Psalm 2:6-9
The connection that links this promise of his Kingdom to the two Church groups in Thyatira is the rewards that will be given to them: the one subduing, and the one keeping my works until the end, I will give to him authority over the Gentiles, and he will tend to them as a shepherd with an iron royal staff, as vessels made of clay are broken, as I also have received from my Father (2:26-27). Here the Lord is promising to the victorious the very same rewards that were promised to him through the prophecies of the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun. God wants his people to share in his victory.
REWARD FOR THYATIRA
Revelation 2:26-28
(2:26) “And the one subduing, and the one keeping my works until the end, I will give to him authority over the Gentiles,(35) (2:27) and he will tend to them as a shepherd with an iron royal staff, as vessels made of clay are broken, as I also have received from my Father. (2:28) And I will give him the morning star. (2:29) The one having an ear, hear what the spirit says to the Assemblies.”
Connecting Thyatira with Holy Jerusalem is: the one subduing, and the one keeping my works until the end, I will give to him authority over the Gentiles, and “they will bring the glory and the honour of the Gentiles” (21:26).
The morning star referred to Jesus himself, as he said to John, “I, Jesus, sent my angel to testify this to you over the Assemblies. I am the Root and the Kin of David, the Radiant Morning Star” (Revelation 22:16).
Footnote
35. Greek Ethnos, meaning any people group other than Jewish, mistranslated as Nations in many Bibles. This has led to some people imagining that when “nations” is mentioned that it refers to entire sovereign countries. There is no consistency with how this word is translated, as sometimes it can become Nations and sometimes it is rendered as Gentiles.
TO SARDIS
Revelation 3:1a
(3:1a) “And to the angel of the Assembly in Sardis, write: These things says he having the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.”
The seven stars are angels of the seven Assemblies.
Revelation 1:20b
At its height, Sardis was a very rich city, which was quite an achievement in ancient times, given that it was a long way inland and thus had no benefit of a seaport. Its wealth came mostly from its gold mines, but it developed other industries, such as fruit orchards and textiles. With its prosperity, the population gained a reputation for being pleasure-seekers and not workers. Today it survives as a village named Sart.
SLEEPING SARDIS
Revelation 3:1b-3
(3:1b) “I know your works, that you have a name that you live, and are dead. (3:2) Stay awake and set fast what you have left, which are about to die. For I have not found your works being fulfilled in the presence of my God. (3:3) Remember, therefore, how you received and heard, and keep and repent. If you do not stay awake I will come to you like a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come to you.”
“. . . lest coming suddenly, he finds you asleep. And what I say to you, I say to all: Stay awake!”
Mark 13:36-37
SLEEPING SARDIS & SIMEON
The tribe of Simeon existed within the territory of Judah and had very little recorded history. Where we can find a clue to a possible linkage to one of the Twelve Church groups is through the actions of Simeon himself. Simeon was always associated with his brother Levi, and that closeness continued with the two tribes until the Levites were called out to become the priests.
The two founders of their tribes, the men Simeon and Levi, took it upon themselves to be judge, jury, and executioners of some Hivites (Genesis 34:13-31). First they lied to them, and then they killed them, and the whole time they believed that what they were doing was right. But God had not told them to do it, and their father Jacob was very upset about it, remembering it to the day he died. Simeon’s deeds, like that of Sleeping Sardis, were not complete in the sight of God: For I have not found your works being fulfilled.
SPOTLESS SARDIS
Revelation 3:4
(3:4) “You also have a few names in Sardis which did not defile their clothes, and they will walk with me in white, because they are worthy.”
. . . make an effort, unblemished and without blame, to be found by him in peace.
2 Peter 3:14
SPOTLESS SARDIS & ISSACHAR
Jacob prophesied that the tribe of Issachar would be strong and peaceful, and do good work.
“Issachar is a strong donkey lying down between two burdens, and he saw the rest was good and the land was pleasant, and he bowed his shoulder to bear his burden, and became servants of slaves.”
Genesis 49:14-15
This spotless record of their quiet, peaceful, and happy existence links them with Spotless Sardis who did not defile their clothes, and therefore have nothing bad recorded against them also. “Servants of slaves,” should be the goal for any Christian wanting to work for other Christians. The origin of the Christian use of the word Deacon (Philippians 1:1) was given for the people acting as servants.
REWARD FOR SARDIS
Revelation 3:5-6
(3:5) “The one subduing, he will be arrayed in white clothes, and I will not obliterate his name from the Book of Life, and will acknowledge his name in the presence of my Father, and in the presence of his angels. (3:6) The one having an ear, hear what the spirit says to the Assemblies.”
“Be cheerful that your names are written in the heavens.”
Luke 10:20b
Connecting Sardis with Holy Jerusalem is the Book of Life: “And nothing profane, and any making a detestation and an untruth, may enter into it; only those having been written in the Book of Life” (21:27).
TO PHILADELPHIA
Revelation 3:7
(3:7) “And to the angel of the Assembly in Philadelphia, write: These things says the Holy and True-One; he having the key of David, the one opening and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens.”
“And I will lay the key of the house of David on his shoulder, so he will open and no one will shut, and he will shut and no one will open.”
Isaiah 22:22
Philadelphia was known as the “Gateway to the East” because the trade route from Rome passed through the city. Due to persistent volcanic activity in the area, the city never developed a large population. Today it is a town named AlaÅŸehir.
FAITHFUL PHILADELPHIA
Revelation 3:8-11
(3:8) “I know your works. Lo, I have given a door being opened before you, and no one is able to shut it, for you have a little power, and have kept my word, and have not denied my name. (3:9) Lo, I will give you some out of the synagogue of Satan, those calling themselves to be Jews and are not, but they lie. Lo, I will make them come and prostrate themselves in homage before my feet, and they will know that I loved you. (3:10) Because you have kept the word of my patient-perseverance, I will also keep you from the hour of trial being about to come on all the world, to test those residing on the earth. (3:11) I am coming without delay. Retain what you have so that no one takes your wreath.”
And the children of those who afflicted you will come bowing to you, and will fall prostrate at the soles of your feet.
Isaiah 60:14a
FAITHFUL PHILADELPHIA & BENJAMIN
Faithful Philadelphia was promised protection by the Lord: I will also keep you from the hour of trial being about to come on all the world. The tribe of Benjamin was also given a promise of protection:
About Benjamin, he said, “The beloved of the LORD will dwell in safety, by him who shelters him all the day long, and he will dwell between his shoulders.”
Deuteronomy 33:12
REWARD FOR PHILADELPHIA
Revelation 3:12-13
(3:12) “I will make the one subduing to be a pillar in the Temple of my God, and he will never leave it. And I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the brand-new Jerusalem which descends out of heaven from my God; and my brand-new name. (3:13) The one having an ear, hear what the spirit says to the Assemblies.”
“I will give them an everlasting name that will not be cut off.”
Isaiah 56:5b
Connecting Philadelphia with Holy Jerusalem is: I will make the one subduing to be a pillar in the Temple of my God, and he will never leave it, “and I saw no Temple in it, for its Temple is the LORD God Almighty and the young lamb” (21:22).
TO LAODICEA
Revelation 3:14
(3:14) “And to the angel of the Assembly in Laodicea, write: These things says the Amen, the Trustful and True Witness, the Commencement of the creation of God.”
This one was with God at the commencement.
John 1:2
Laodicea closely neighboured two other cities, Hierapolis and Colossae. Paul mentioned the Laodicean Christians in his letter to the Colossians in about the year AD 62. He also said that he intended the Laodiceans to receive another of his letters (Colossians 2:1), and this may be what is now known as the Epistle to the Ephesians, which is thought to have been circulated to all the churches of Asia Minor.

In AD 65 a major earthquake destroyed all three of these close cities,(36) but the Laodiceans managed to rebuild their city without any of the customary assistance from Rome, showing that they must have been wealthy. This shows why the Lord’s main complaint against this church was their reliance on wealth and not on faith.
Footnote
36. According to the Preterists, John, who lived in nearby Ephesus, must have written Revelation at a time soon after the earthquake, included Laodicea in his letters with the knowledge that their city was busy rebuilding and re-establishing itself, without a mention of any such thing.
LUKEWARM LAODICEA
Revelation 3:15-20
(3:15) “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were cold or hot. (3:16) So, because you are lukewarm, neither cold nor hot, I am about to spit you out of my mouth! (3:17) For you say, ‘I am wealthy, I have prospered and need nothing.’ You do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. (3:18) I recommend you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be wealthy; and white garments, so that you may be clothed, and the disgrace of you being without dress may not be revealed; and rub eye-salve on your eyes so that you may see. (3:19) I admonish and discipline those whom I love. Therefore be zealous and repent. (3:20) Lo, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will enter with him and I will dine with him, and he with me.”
“Let your hips be belted and lamps burning. And be like people looking for their lord when he returns from the wedding festivals, that coming and knocking, they may at once open to him.”
Luke 12:35-36
LUKEWARM LAODICEA & ASHER
Almost nothing is known about the man Asher or his tribe, except for the prophecy given by Jacob.
“Asher will have much food, and will yield royal delicacies.”
Genesis 49:20
Laodicea was told: Lo, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will enter with him and I will dine with him, and he with me. Here the King of kings requested to enter their house and share their food, the same as the Asher prophecy.
REWARD FOR LAODICEA
Revelation 3:21-22
(3:21) “The one subduing, I will give him to sit down with me on my throne, as I also subdued and sat with my Father on his throne. (3:22) The one having an ear, hear what the spirit says to the Assemblies.”
Do you not know that the holy-ones will judge the world?
1 Corinthians 6:2a
“The one having ears to hear, let him hear!”
Luke 14:35b
Connecting Laodicea with Holy Jerusalem is: the one subduing, I will give him to sit down with me on my throne, as I also subdued and sat with my Father on his throne, “And the throne of God and of the young lamb will be in it” (22:3).
SEVEN LETTERS’ PARALLELS WITH THE SECOND PAROUSIA
The Seven Letters also contain many clear parallels with the events of the Second Parousia.(37) We are told to look for the Signs of the Times (Matthew 16:3): and rub eye-salve on your eyes so that you may see (3:18). He will return quickly: I am coming to you without delay (2:5). This will precede a war against the unjust: I will come to you without delay, and will make war with them by the sword of my mouth (2:16).

His people will be kept safe from the trouble in the world: I will also keep you from the hour of trial being about to come on all the world, to test those residing on the earth (3:10), which will precede the Resurrection which is the reward (“wreath”) of eternal life: the Devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and ten days you will have trouble . . . Be trustful even to death, and I will give you the wreath of life (2:10).
The Babylon religious system will be destroyed: the woman Jezebel, the one calling herself a prophetess (2:20). Lo, I am throwing her, and those committing adultery with her, onto a bed of great trouble, unless they repent of her works (2:22).
The believers will be taken in secret to be with the Lord: I will come to you like a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come to you (3:3), and this will precede the “wreath of life” that is the Resurrection and eternal life: I am coming without delay. Retain what you have so that no one takes your wreath (3:11), and the one subduing will not be wronged by the second death (2:11).

We will be like a purely-dressed bride for the Lord, the Holy Jerusalem: they will walk with me in white, because they are worthy (3:4), and white garments, so that you may be clothed (3:18). The Messianic Kingdom will be ruled from the throne of David: he having the key of David, the one opening and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens (3:7), and the one subduing, I will give him to sit down with me on my throne (3:21).
Footnote
37. There are so many prophetic connections in Revelation, and this is yet another. How clear is it that the book could not have been written by a human mind, but by the Divine?
SEVEN LETTERS’ PARALLELS WITH RUTH
The Old Testament story of Ruth, the great-grandmother of King David, is a perfect allegory of the Bride of the Lord, and the Seven Letters contain many prophetic similarities. There is a prophecy that says, “Lo, the days are coming, says the Lord the LORD, when I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but for the hearing of the words of the LORD” (Amos 8:11). The Book of Ruth begins with: “And it came to pass, in the days when judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land” (Ruth 1:1a). A prophetic interpretation of this simple sentence in Ruth is: “In the days before the King comes to rule, there will be spiritual famine in the world.” Before the world sees the Messiah and before he rules as King, it will be a violent and lawless time, and one in which people will yearn for the truth of God, but there will be a great shortage of the truth. The promise of keeping strong until the end is what was said to Thyatira: the one subduing, and the one keeping my works until the end, I will give to him authority over the Gentiles (2:26).
Similar to the Lord feeding his people, Ruth was fed by Boaz:
And at the mealtime, Boaz said to her, “Come here and eat the bread and dip your bread in the vinegar.” So she sat beside the harvesters, and he passed her roasted grain, and she ate and was satisfied, and kept some leftover.
Ruth 2:14
The same way, Pergamum was promised: to the one subduing, I will give him hidden manna to eat (2:17), and Laodicea was assured: I will enter with him and I will dine with him, and he with me (3:20).
As with the End of the Age compared to a harvest of “wheat and chaff,” Ruth was in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest (Ruth 1:22):
And I saw, and lo, a white cloud, and one sitting on the cloud similar to the Son of Man, having a golden wreath on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. And another angel came out of the Temple, crying out with a loud voice to the one sitting on the cloud, “Send your sickle and harvest, because the hour to harvest has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.” And the one sitting on the cloud swung his sickle on the earth, and the earth was harvested.
Revelation 14:14-16
“And she left and went and gathered in the field after the harvesters, and she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.”
Ruth 2:3
Ruth was allowed to take of the water: “And when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink from what the young men have drawn” (Ruth 2:9b). In the same way, living water is freely available (Isaiah 55:1; John 4:10, 13; Revelation 22:17b).
Like Ephesus, Ruth worked hard: “And she said, ‘Let me gather and remove among the sheaves after the harvesters.’ So she went and continued from then through until morning, and rested in a little house” (Ruth 2:7). Ephesus was told: you have worked hard and have not tired (2:3).
As Smyrna was promised: the one subduing will not be wronged (2:11), Ruth was protected by Boaz:
And Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter, will you not listen? Don’t go to gather in another’s field, nor go from this place, but stay close by my servant girls. Watch the field where they harvest, and follow after them. I commanded the young men to not touch you.”
Ruth 2:8-9a
Ruth was a Moabite who married a man from the tribe of Judah, but he died and she was left childless (Ruth 1:3-5). When Ruth married again, to Boaz from the tribe of Judah, she was able to have a family with him. Like Smyrna, she was not wronged by the second death (2:11).
Ruth dressed and prepared herself for her future husband: “Wash yourself, and anoint yourself, and put on your best garment” (Ruth 3:3a), which is paralleled in the Bride of Christ: “For the wedding festival of the young lamb came, and his bride prepared herself” (Revelation 19:7b). Sardis was promised the same, dressed in purity for God: the one subduing, he will be arrayed in white clothes (3:5).
According to the law of the time, Boaz needed to have a legal document of ownership in order to marry Ruth:
And Boaz said, “On the day you buy the field from Naomi, you must also buy Ruth of the Moabites, the wife of the dead one, to perpetuate the dead-one’s inheritance.”
And the kinsman said, “I cannot redeem it, lest I ruin my own inheritance. You redeem it for yourself. I cannot redeem it.” (This was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging. To confirm anything one man took off his sandal and gave it to the other. This was a confirmation in Israel.) Therefore the kinsman said to Boaz, “Buy it yourself,” and he took off his sandal.
And Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses that his day I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, from the hand of Naomi. Also, Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, I have acquired as my wife, to raise up the name of the dead-one through his inheritance, that the name of the dead-one may not be cut off from among his brothers, and from the gate of his home town. Today you are witnesses.” . . . So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife.
Ruth 4:5-10, 13
This is the same as the legal ownership given to the believers of the Lord, as in the promise given to Philadelphia: I will write on him the name of my God (3:12).
DO NOT WRITE
Revelation 10:4-7
(10:4) And when the voices of the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write, and I heard a voice from the sky saying to me, “Seal what the seven thunders said and do not write these things.” (10:5) And the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land lifted up his head to the sky (10:6) and swore by him living forever and ever, who created the sky and all things in it, and the land and all things in it, and the sea and all things in it, that there will be no more time, (10:7) but in the days of the sound of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound a trumpet blast, the secret of God may be completed, as he announced the good news to his slaves the prophets.
In other generations it was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been unveiled to his holy delegates and prophets in the spirit.
Ephesians 3:5
The time period that the Bible calls “Last Days” (2 Timothy 3:1; Hebrews 1:2; James 5:3; 2 Peter 3:3) began after the Resurrection of our Lord. This book uses the phrase End Times, which means the same as Last Days, for the time when all the prophecies about the Second Parousia will be fulfilled. The obvious question is how can 2,000 years of history be called an “end”? Each generation believed that theirs was the last, otherwise they might have lost hope. This is also true for the generation of today, that we hope to be the last one before the Lord returns, but there may be many more generations to follow. But what is also true, is that eventually there must come a generation that will be the one who will witness the end of this world, who will experience the Rapture.
The secret of God means the Gospel, the message of the Death and Resurrection of our Lord, that will be preached to the world even until that time of the end, right up until the Second Parousia, which will happen with the sound of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound a trumpet blast. The good news (the phrase from where we get the word Gospel) was unknown to the world before the Lord’s Resurrection; purposely kept secret by God.
In contrast to 1:19, when John was instructed to write the message, he was told, “do not write these things.” This is similar to what Daniel was told: “But you, Daniel, conceal the words and seal the book until the time of the end” (Daniel 12:4a). Daniel was told that his prophecy would not be fulfilled in his own time, but “in the time of the end.” It appears that John was told the same, to seal what the seven thunders said, because the fulfilment would not take place in his day, but many years in the future.
There are four parts to the following vision, and they are easy to understand when compared with the parallels in the Seven Letters. They both concern the End Times, which is when the True Church causes the Gospel to spread all over the world, while facing opposition from both the Devil and the people he uses.

1) The Seven Thunders with a sealed message (10:1-7)
2) The Little Book that is consumed and then preached (10:8-11)
3) Measure the Temple but do not count the Gentiles (11:1-2)
4) The work of the Two Witnesses (11:3-13)

The end of the Last Days heralded by a sound of a trumpet blast was also prophesied by Paul:
Lo, I tell you a secret: We will not all fall asleep, but we will all be changed, in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For a trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed.
1 Corinthians 15:51-52
Because the Lord himself, with a shout of a chief-angel’s voice and with God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise again first.
1 Thessalonians 4:16
Paul gave his prophecy about forty years before John, but exactly how did Paul know that it would be the “last” trumpet? Some commentators say that Paul’s inspiration came from Numbers 10:1-7, which detailed instructions given to the camp of the Israelites. When the second trumpet sounded, they were to move their camp. This was meant to be from where Paul got his “last trumpet,” but that does not explain why he also mentioned the “voice of the archangel.” The moving of the camp also had nothing to do with the coming of the Messiah, since a “last trumpet,” or “loud command of the archangel,” was not revealed in the Old Testament as being significant toward the coming Messiah, nor is it found in any Jewish Apocryphal book. The only possible way that Paul could have known this, was by a prophetic word from God, or in a vision similar to John’s. This is not at all unreasonable, since Paul knew many things about the future state of the True Church and the activity of the Antichrist, and he taught them to the Thessalonian Christians (2 Thessalonians 2:5).
LITTLE BOOK
Revelation 10:8-11
(10:8) And the voice which I heard from the sky was speaking to me again, and saying, “Go; take the little book having been opened up in the hand of the angel standing on the sea and on the land.”
(10:9) And I went to the angel, saying to him, “Give me the little book.”
And he said to me, “Take and devour it, and it will make your belly bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.” (10:10) And I took the little book from the hand of the angel and devoured it. And in my mouth it was as sweet as honey, and when I ate it was made bitter in my belly. (10:11) And he says to me, “You must again prophesy before many peoples and Gentiles and tongues, and many kings.”
And when I looked, there was a hand stretched out to me, and in it was a scroll of a book. And he opened it before me, and writing was on the inside and the outside, and written on it were lamentations and mourning and woe. And he said to me, “Son of man, eat what you find, eat this scroll, and go speak to the house of Israel.” So I opened my mouth and he fed me the scroll. And he said to me, “Son of man, feed your belly and fill your stomach with this scroll I gave you.” So I ate it, and it was like sweet honey in my mouth. And he said to me, “Son of man, go to the house of Israel, and speak my words to them.” So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness, angry in my spirit, but the hand of the LORD upon me was mighty.
Ezekiel 2:9-3:4, 3:14
Your words were found and I ate them, and your word was my joy, and rejoicing of my heart, for I am called by your name, the LORD God.
Jeremiah 15:16
How sweet are your words! Sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Psalm 119:103
After John was told to not write the words of the heavenly messenger, he was then told to eat the book. Ezekiel was given the same instructions when he was sent to “a rebellious people,” the Israelites of the 6th Century BC. This was during the Babylonian Captivity, which was a picture of the True Church under spiritual captivity. After John consumed the little book he was told to preach it, confirming that it means the Gospel.(38)
Footnote
38. Concluding that the Little Book represents the Gospel has proven to be an unnecessary mystery for Revelation teachers, especially for Futurists, who leave it unexplained. Historicists will say that the Little Book is the Bible during that time of the Reformation when it was freely read. Preterists, however, claim that the Little Book is John’s book Revelation, which defies all logic.
MEASURE THE TEMPLE
Revelation 11:1-2
(11:1) And a stick like a staff was given to me, and told, “Rise up and measure the Temple of God, and the altar, and those prostrating themselves in homage in it. (11:2) And do not measure the courtyard outside the Temple; cast it out, for it was given to the Gentiles, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months.”
“Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.”
Luke 21:24b
The people called Gentiles have no part in the Temple (Revelation 2:9, 3:9). Those who do not accept the Gospel are considered to be apart from God’s people, and they become spiritual Gentiles. Their role in God’s plan is to be the enemies of the truth, who live in the courtyard outside, and they will try to oppress those who are inside the Temple, which is symbolic of the True Church, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months.
Understanding what the “42 months” refers to is vital to understanding Revelation and the Last Days. There are other renderings of this time period, such as “time, time, and half a times,” and 1,260 days. Daniel also used the phrase “time, times, and half a time” (Daniel 7:25, 12:7). It is never directly called “three-and-a-half years.” Another phrase used in Revelation, that is usually ignored, is “three-and-a-half days” (11:11), which is surely referring to the same time period.(39)
There are many views on what this time period means.(40) A common modern term is “Great Tribulation,” which is used by Futurists to mean a literal three-and-a-half years that is yet to happen. Historicists exchange “days” for “years” and think that it means a time period of 1,260 years, and then apply those years to whatever they are trying to prove from history. Inevitably, they conclude that this time period has already ended, so it has no impact on today’s modern world.
It is the position of this book that it is not three-and-a-half literal years, but an unknowable time period that we are already part of, and have been for many years.
Footnotes
39. The only reason that it is ignored by Revelation teachers is because it does not fit with their interpretations.
40. Historicists apply 1,260 years to their time charts and say that it represents the rule of Papal Rome, although none of them seem to agree as to what the start and end point is, which is rather an important point if their system is correct. Futurists claim a strict literal interpretation of 1,260 days, in the future. Idealists see it as symbolic of the entire church age. Preterists see it as not entirely literal, but close, and representing the time period of the First Jewish War, which lasted from AD 66-73 (or only to the part when the Temple was destroyed in AD 70).
TIMES OF THE GENTILES
The mystery began with the prophet Jeremiah in 588 BC, when he was told that God’s people will be in the Babylonian Captivity for 70 years:
For thus the LORD says, that after seventy years are completed at Babylon, I will visit you and perform my good word toward you, and cause you to return to this place. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. And you will call on me, and go and pray to me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek me and find me, when you search for me with all your heart. And I will be found by you, says the LORD, and I will bring you back from your captivity, and I will gather you from all the Gentiles, and from all the places where I have driven you, says the LORD. And I will bring you to the place from where I caused you to be carried away captive.
Jeremiah 29:10-14
Daniel studied these words in about the year 539 BC, and realised that the prophecy given by Jeremiah, about fifty years earlier, was soon to be fulfilled. He may even have understood it to mean that the Messiah and his Messianic Kingdom would soon come to the world.
In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of years which came by the word of the LORD through the prophet Jeremiah, that he would consecrate seventy years for the desolations of Jerusalem.
Daniel 9:2
Daniel prayed for an answer, and was visited by the angel Gabriel, who gave him an unexpected message. The following quote is rendered in a very literal translation, since for an unknown reason, practically every English Bible translation has mangled it.(41)
Seventy sevens are determined on your people and on your holy city to finish transgression, to make an end of sins, and to make atonement for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy. Know and therefore understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem, to the Messiah the Prince, shall be seven sevens, and sixty-two, and again shall the street be built, and the wall, and even in distressing times, and after the sixty-two sevens the Messiah shall be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary, and the end shall be with a flood, and desolations are determined to the end of the war, and he shall confirm the covenant with the many for one seven, and in the middle of the seven he shall cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease, and shall make the abomination of desolation in the extreme place, even until the determined consummation shall be poured on the desolate.
Daniel 9:24-27
There is probably no greater prophecy in the Bible. It clearly talks about the work of the Messiah, including his First and Second Parousia, and that 70 “sevens” will transpire before the completion of the End Times. The use of “sevens” (usually translated as Weeks) in this prophecy is understood as a time period of seven years, but the Hebrew word Shabua can mean “seven of anything.”
It begins with the “command to restore Jerusalem;” not the actual restoration work, but the command. The fulfilment of this event was recorded in Nehemiah 2:1, “in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king,” which was the year 444 BC. From that year there was to be 62 “sevens” plus 7 “sevens” until the Messiah would be “cut off” and “have nothing.” How can this prophecy of the Messiah being “cut off” and having “nothing” be anything other than the Crucifixion of our Lord? Like all Bible prophecy, it was impossible to understand or foresee before its fulfilment. After its fulfilment it became clear.
Since 1,260 days and 42 months mean the same time period, those months must consist of thirty days, so each year is of 360 days. This calculation of a 360-day year is known as a Prophetic Year. The 62 + 7 “sevens” in Prophetic Years is 173,880 days, which is 476 Solar Years (365.25 days). From 444 BC to AD 33 was a time period of 476 years.
The date when the Lord began his ministry was reliably recorded by Luke as “the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar” (Luke 3:1), which was AD 29-30. This was the only place in the New Testament where a date was provided. Using the year of the reign of the emperor was the common dating system in the ancient world, and Tiberius Caesar began his reign on 18 September AD 14.
There remains a persistent opinion with Bible teachers that Tiberius had been a co-emperor with his predecessor Augustus for three years, so the date in Luke should be AD 27.(42) This came about after it was determined that the date of the Crucifixion was AD 30, but that date was based on weak evidence. There is no reason to think that Luke changed the accepted dating system, so this attempt to push the date back by three years is unwarranted. The date AD 30 was when Jesus began his ministry, and it ended in AD 33. We can be sure that his ministry lasted three years by John recording the Passover three times (John 2:13; 6:4; 11:55).
Footnotes
41. Many translations find inexplicable difficulty in rendering to English the Daniel 9:25 Hebrew words Masiah (literally The Anointed, Messiah, Christ in Greek) and Nagid (the leader, the ruler, the prince). It is Messiah the Prince. There is no need for ambiguity. Some translations have “the anointed one, the prince” with the footnote “Messiah” (American Standard Version, GOD’S WORD Translation, Jubilee Bible 2000, Lexham English Bible, Living Bible, New Living Translation, World English Bible). The International Standard Version has “Anointed Commander,” and while the footnote has “Messiah” it also says that it may be “a senior officer”!
Many have no “Messiah” footnote at all (Christian Standard Bible, Common English Bible, English Standard Version, Expanded Bible, Good News Translation, International Children’s Bible, The Message, New Century Version, New English Translation, New International Reader’s Version, New International Version, New Life Version, New Revised Standard Version, Revised Standard Version, The Voice). The Contemporary English Version appears to go out of its way to not let the reader know that it is referring to the Messiah. The Easy-to-Read Version has “Chosen King,” with “anointed one” in a footnote. The New American Bible (Revised Edition), a Catholic translation, denies that the passage concerns the End of the Age and says that the “anointed one” was the Jewish High Priest Onias III who died in 171 BC.
Most translations change the Abomination of Desolation (Dan 9:27) into a confusing literal sentence. Even the King James Version changes the Matthew “holy place” to “the overspreading,” when it could have used Matthew 24:15 as its guide.

When ye therefore shall see THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand) [KJV Matt 24:15 emphasis added]
And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading OF ABOMINATIONS HE SHALL MAKE IT DESOLATE, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. [KJV Daniel 9:27 emphasis added]

Is the KJV saying that the abomination causes an “overspreading”? If so, where does it say that it stands in the Holy Place, as the Lord said? Almost every translation has “holy place” in Matthew 24:15, apart from the New Life Version (“the house of God in Jerusalem”) and The Message (“the Temple sanctuary”). The Voice has “the most holy place.”
It is interesting that the Temple in Jerusalem is not precisely mentioned in the Daniel passage, and instead there is a vague word (Kanaph) meaning a large place, or a far off place. Several translations think that the word Temple (Hekal) is in the text (New International Reader’s Version, and the New International Version that includes a footnote that it might be “wing”). There is “a wing of the temple” (Christian Standard Bible, Holman Christian Standard Bible), “highest point of the temple” (Good News Translation, International Children’s Bible, etc.) or even “uttermost edge of the Sanctuary” (International Standard Version).
Many translations think that the “wing” is part of the abomination, as in “on the wing of abominations” (English Standard Version, Modern English Version, American Standard Version, New American Standard Bible, Amplified Bible, New King James Version, Revised Standard Version, Tree of Life Version, World English Bible), whatever that means. It is difficult to not conclude that many of these translations have deliberately made the text confusing.
42. The date AD 26 or 27 was achieved by needlessly complicating the history of Tiberius’ rule, when he was a joint ruler with Augustus AD 11 to 14. This is not how the dating system of the time worked. AD 11 would have been considered to be the 38th year of Augustus, not the first of Augustus and Tiberius. There is no evidence that any ancient chronologer ever used a dating system with the two emperors. Given the time, it would have been highly difficult for the average citizen to know the dating system of the precise date that an emperor might have had a co-ruler. It was always dated from the emperor’s death and the ascension of his successor, which would have been heralded throughout the empire.
THE 70th WEEK OF BABYLON
Daniel’s prophecy said that after the Crucifixion there would be one “seven” left. The mystery of its fulfilment has created endless confusion. It is worth remembering that the prophecy from Jeremiah and Daniel concerned the People of God during the Babylonian Captivity. According to the Daniel prophecy, the captivity will not end until the Second Parousia. When the Jews returned to Israel from Babylon, to rebuild the city and the Temple, they remained under the religious bondage of Babylon. This spiritual bondage was present during the First Parousia of the Messiah, and it will continue to control the True Church, and the entire world, up until the Second Parousia.(43) The Christians of today, and many previous generations of Christians before, have lived in the Babylonian Captivity without being fully aware.
One of the main mysteries presented in the Book of Revelation is the identity of Babylon the Great, the Harlot “drunk on the blood of the saints” who sits on “the city of seven hills” (17:2, 9), which cannot be anything else other than the Roman Catholic Church.(44) The moment when the Roman Catholic Church took full power was the beginning of the 70th “seven,” and it is better titled as the “70th Week of Babylon.”(45)
Remarkably, the Roman Catholic Church itself used the phrase Babylonian Captivity for the time when the papal court ruled from Avignon (1303-1378). Clement V was a Frenchman and a friend of the French king, and they agreed to set up the papal court in the small Provençal city of Avignon. His three successors, John XXII, Benedict XII, and Clement VI, never set foot in Italy. Avignon quickly became known as New Babylon. Back in Rome, the Italians were unhappy with the French arrangement, and set up their own popes to rival the ones in Avignon. The Roman Catholic Church now calls those Roman popes anti-popes.
This was the Roman Catholic Church’s most shameful period. People were cruelly tortured and killed in the same buildings where papal officials lived in excessive luxury. The famous Renaissance scholar and poet Petrach described the Avignon papal court as, “the shame of mankind, a sink of vice, a sewer where is gathered all the filth of the world. There God is held in contempt. Money alone is worshipped, and the laws of God and men are trampled underfoot. Everything there breathes a lie; the air, the earth, the houses, and above all the bedrooms.”
The most important question is, at what date did the Roman Catholic Church achieve its full and absolute authority, so that it was able to put the True Church under captivity? While the church was corrupt and led by dishonest bishops throughout the 3rd Century AD, it was not until the 4th Century when it gained the support of the Roman government. Many teachers, especially Historicists, centre on Emperor Constantine’s Edict of Milan in AD 313, which was an order of religious toleration to end the widespread Christian persecution. The Edict allowed Christians to live in peace, but it did not grant any political power or social status to Christian leaders.(46) The empire still remained under its pagan gods and rituals, and the only difference was that the Christians were no longer persecuted. The eastern provinces of the empire, however, were governed by rivals of Constantine, and they did nothing to cease Christian persecution until Constantine conquered them in AD 324.
Nothing of what Constantine did made him the fulfilment of the Antichrist. He never said that he was Christ on Earth, and nor did he call for Christ’s worship to be directed to him, and nor did he proclaim that he was the only way to salvation. It was true that Constantine wanted to take control of Christianity, but this was only done as part of his greater ambition of ending divisions and creating peace in his empire. Constantine also spent much time on his other religious obsession, that of Mithras, in the form of Sun Worship. He coined the day of worship to be Sunday (as it still is), and he had coins struck that paid homage to the Sun.
The last person to rule over a truly united Roman Empire was Theodosius (AD 347-395), who ruled the East from AD 379 to AD 392, and then became sole emperor of the empire after AD 392. He advocated that the religion of the Roman Empire must be Christianity. More specifically, it was to be Roman Catholic Christianity.
In AD 380 he joined with his rivals Gratian and Valentinian II to issue the Edict of Thessalonica, a document that changed the Roman world. Issued on 27 February 380, the edict announced that the only religion tolerated in the Roman Empire would be Christianity. This was an empire built on the faith of Rome’s own gods, with temples and priests in every city, but now the citizens were told that they must discard all the religions of their forefathers and embrace only the one, and one from a foreign land.
THE EDICT OF THESSALONICA (in Latin)
IMPPP.

THE EDICT OF THESSALONICA (in English)
EMPERORS GRATIAN, VALENTINIAN AND THEODOSIUS AUGUSTI. EDICT TO THE PEOPLE OF CONSTANTINOPLE.
It is our desire that all the various nations which are subject to our Clemency and Moderation, should continue to profess that religion which was delivered to the Romans by the divine Apostle Peter, as it has been preserved by faithful tradition, and which is now professed by the Pontiff Damasus and by Peter, Bishop of Alexandria, a man of apostolic holiness. According to the apostolic teaching and the doctrine of the Gospel, let us believe in the one deity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, in equal majesty and in a holy Trinity. We authorize the followers of this law to assume the title of Catholic Christians; but as for the others, since, in our judgement they are foolish madmen, we decree that they shall be branded with the ignominious name of heretics, and shall not presume to give to their conventicles the name of churches. They will suffer in the first place the chastisement of the divine condemnation and in the second the punishment of our authority which in accordance with the will of Heaven we shall decide to inflict. (Given in Thessalonica on the third day from the Calends of March, during the Fifth Consulate of Gratian Augustus and first of Theodosius Augustus)
It is worth noting that from the years AD 33 to AD 380 was a time span of 347 years, which was 50 “Weeks” (352 360-day years).
Suddenly, everything had changed. The new law of the Roman Empire was that to not follow Rome’s brand of Christianity was to be called a heretic, and suffer “punishment of our authority.”(47) Damasus(48) was the first pope to take the title Pontifex Maximus, given to him by Emperor Gratian, which had previously only been used for the heads of the pagan Roman priesthood.
Only five years after the Edict was issued, in AD 385, the first people labelled as “heretics” against the authority of Rome were executed. A church council to discuss their “problem” had been convened mere months after the Edict. The ascetic and totally harmless Priscillianists sought to live in peace and biblical meditation, and not under the thumb of Rome-appointed bishops. For that, their leader Priscillian, who was held in such esteem that he became bishop of Ávila in Spain, was beheaded, along with his followers. They were falsely charged with teaching magic, which was claimed to be a mixture of Gnosticism and Manichaeism. Their few writings to survive show no heresy whatsoever, and their only crime was to be victims of slander by their enemies. Nevertheless, the Priscillianists were the first people to be executed with the approval of the Roman Catholic Church, and to this day, their movement remains condemned as heresy. Because of this acceptance, and because they still claim to be successors of those bishops who condemned the innocent, all current priests of the Roman Catholic Church have the martyrs blood on their hands, starting with the Priscillianists; all those men who dress in black and claim to represent Jesus on earth, but never do anything that he did. As the Lord said to the Pharisees:
And he said, “Woe also to you experts of the law! For you burden people with oppressive loads, and yourselves do not touch the loads with one of your fingers. Woe to you, for you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them! Therefore you testify and consent to the works of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs. Because of this the wisdom of God also said, ‘I will delegate to them prophets and delegates, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’ that the blood of all the prophets having been poured out from the founding of the world may be sought from this generation! From the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the house. Yes, I say to you, it will be sought from this generation! Woe to you, experts of the law! For you took away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those having entered.”
Luke 11:46-52
Footnotes
43. It seems possible, according to what some prophecies seems to suggest, that there will be a brief time period after the Fall of Babylon and the actual appearing of the Lord. This may be an unknown number of years.
44. No other entity, throughout all history, comes anywhere as close, either in religious and political corruption, or in backing terrible wars, and atrocities such as the Inquisition, all conducted in the name of God.
45. It is curious that for many centuries religious people look to Rome as the centre of Christianity, when Rome is the city of the people who destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple. Why would God then grant the people of such a city to be his representatives, and the central place for his worship? This is the equivalent of when Jerusalem and the Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians, and subsequent generations of Jews treating Babylon as their spiritual home—how absurd. Is it not clear how Rome represents Babylon, and how its religion opposes the true faith while it masquerades as the only true faith?
46. An often repeated idea is that Constantine made Christianity the religion of the Roman Empire, when it is simply not true. And yet, this is stated as a fact even in documents that appear to be scholarly.
47. This was the time when the people, with the full approval of Theodosius, destroyed anything that they viewed as pagan throughout the empire, from statues to temples, including the Temple of Zeus in Olympia and the Temple of Serapis in Alexandria. It was a full Christianisation of the empire. Because of the pagan connections, the Olympic Games were officially ended in AD 393.
48. Damasus appointed Ascholius as bishop of Thessalonica to influence the edict. As interesting character himself, Damasus manufactured an image of himself implanted into glass cups during his campaign to become pope, and his election caused riots in Rome as his supporters murdered over a hundred supporters of his rival Ursinus.
THE FIRST HALF OF THE 70th WEEK
If the last “week,” the 70th of Babylon, is indeed the history of the Roman Catholic Church that started in AD 380 and will presumably end sometime in this 21st century, then the “midst of the week” would have begun somewhere around the early 13th Century. This would therefore have been the start of the Times of the Gentiles, when the “Holy City” the True Church is “trampled.”(49)
The first half of this time period was bad enough. Soon after AD 380 the Roman Empire was attacked and severely weakened, as many Germanic tribes gained strength and pushed through the northern borders. The entire Empire came under great fear, and wars and disease increased to levels never before seen, as the Lord warned would happen. This was merely the start of the 70th Week.
And you are about to hear of wars and rumours of wars. Take heed, do not be frightened, for all these things must happen, but the end is not yet. For nation will be raised up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines and pestilences and earthquakes in various places. But all these are a commencement of birth-pains. Then will they hand you over to trouble, and will kill you. And you will be detested by all the Gentiles because of my name. And then many will be offended, and they will hand over one another, and will detest one another. And many pseudo-prophets will be raised up, and will cause many to be led astray. And because lawlessness will have been increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one persisting to the end, this one will be saved. And this good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed in all the world, for a testimony to all the Gentiles. And then the end will come.
Matthew 24:6-14
The Lord said that there would be widespread Christian opposition and persecution, as noted in the Seven Letters. Many false religious leaders would be “raised up” to deceive many. They would come in the guise of Messiahs, either to tout a new religion (Mohammad), or to claim to represent the Messiah in the flesh on earth (the popes). This would cause the Apostasy that was spoken of by Paul.
Let no one delude you in any way, because unless first comes the apostasy, and the person of sin is unveiled, the son of ruin, he opposing and exalting himself over everything being called God or object of worship, so as for him to sit down in the sanctuary of God as God, exhibiting himself that he is a god.
2 Thessalonians 2:3-4
“The appellation of God had been confirmed by Constantine on the Pope, who, being God, cannot be judged by man.”
Pope Nicholas I (858-867)
“We declare, we proclaim, announce, and define that it is altogether necessary for salvation that every creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff.”
Pope Boniface VIII (1294-1303)
“The Pope and God are the same, so he has all power in Heaven and earth.”
Pope Pius V (1556-1572)
“This is our last lesson to you: receive it, engrave it in your minds, all of you: by God’s commandment salvation is to be found nowhere but in the Church; the strong and effective instrument of salvation is none other than the Roman Pontificate. . . . We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty.”
Pope Leo XIII (1878-1903)
“The Saviour Himself is the door of the sheepfold: ‘I am the door of the sheep.’ Into this fold of Jesus Christ, no man may enter unless he be led by the Sovereign Pontiff; and only if they be united to him can men be saved, for the Roman Pontiff is the Vicar of Christ and his personal representative on earth.”
Pope John XXIII (1958-1963)
How dare this man John XXIII presume to be the only one who can lead people to Jesus, the only one who can lead people to salvation, the only one who can lead people to Heaven. How is that not evidence of him taking the place of Jesus and the Holy Spirit and the Father?
Footnote
49. This is also known as the Great Tribulation, the spiritual “three-and-a-half years,” which makes irrelevant the entire argument of any “pre-tribulation” rapture, which is dispensationalist nonsense.
THE GOSPEL PREACHED
As John was told, “You must again prophesy before many peoples and Gentiles and tongues, and many kings,” the Gospel will be preached to the entire world before the end. This will happen in the face of the Babylonian religious oppression. The Lord quoted from the same Daniel prophecy of the 70 Weeks, and he said that if the days were not shortened then “no one will survive.”
When, therefore, you see the detestation of desolation, spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (the one reading, let him heed), then let those in Judea run away to the mountains. Let the one on the roof not come down to take anything from his home. And let the one in the farm not return back to take his garment. But woe to those who are pregnant, and to those breastfeeding in those days. And pray that your escape will not be in winter, nor on a Sabbath. For at that time there will be great trouble, such as has not been from the commencement of the world until now; no, nor ever will be. And if those days were not shortened, not any flesh would be saved. But on account of the select, those days will be shortened.
Matthew 24:15-22
This prophecy by the Lord had a double meaning. First it concerned the people of the time of the Roman invasion AD 67-73 to quell a Jewish uprising, when Jerusalem was besieged and the Temple was destroyed in AD 70, as foretold in Daniel 9:26. While some people claim that this is the only fulfilment of this prophecy, it is clear that there is a secondary meaning, since he said that it will be the worst trouble in the history of the world, and if he did not intervene then “no flesh” would survive. The prophecy of Daniel 9:27, therefore, must happen future from AD 70. And yet, many teachers and translators attempt to portray this passage in Daniel as fulfilled by the Maccabees in the 2nd Century BC, ignoring that the Lord said it would be future of his time.
THE MIDST OF THE 70th WEEK
According to Daniel’s prophecy, at about the half-way point of the 70th Week, the Abomination of Desolation would be revealed.
And he shall confirm the covenant with the many for one seven, and in the middle of the seven he shall cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease, and shall make the abomination of desolation in the extreme place, even until the determined consummation shall be poured on the desolate.
Daniel 9:27
Instead of “the extreme place,” many translations insert the word Temple, which was not in the original text. The word in question, Kanaph, can mean Edge, Wing, or Extremity. But an extremity of what? Is it a place inside the Temple, or outside? The quote of Daniel by the Lord, as recorded in Matthew 24:15, is literally “holy place,” so the Lord did not specifically state that it meant the Temple in Jerusalem. Or is it a place far removed from Jerusalem, such as Rome? Should “extreme place” be taken to mean “very far away”?
Many people assume that the “he” in “he will make the abomination of desolation” refers to the Antichrist, but it is the King of the North who will enact it (Daniel 11:31). When applying the parallel interpretation to Daniel’s visions, it can be seen that the same events were described. It is perfectly reasonable to conclude that “the abomination of desolation” means the Papacy. What else would the Lord call a man who demands to be worshipped as God on Earth, while trapping people inside the labyrinth of Catholic doctrines? Once it is accepted that the “extremity” means the Vatican in Rome, we can clearly see why, in about the year 1200, the Roman Catholic Church took a nasty turn.
The majority of popes during the Dark Ages only concerned themselves with getting rich, repaying debts, silencing enemies, and ensuring that members of their family were destined to the same role. From the time of Hilderbrand of Tuscany (1015-1085), that all changed. As an advisor to four popes, Hildebrand saw the full potential of the papal chair. As Pope Gregory VII, he passed laws that said no one could judge the church or judge the pope, who was “unable to commit error.” Every prince was required to kiss the pope’s feet. Gregory VII put into law the celibacy of priests (as Paul said would happen in 1 Timothy 4:3), forcing many marriages to devolve. For passing that law, the pope was excommunicated by a council held at Pavia in 1076.
What is key to the history of the papacy is that Gregory VII was the first pope who learned how to control kings. He accused the young emperor Henry IV, the King of the Germans, of plotting against him, and then forced him to seek repentance, by standing barefoot in the snow for three days and nights, with no food. The humility he imposed on Henry IV ensured that no future king or prince would defy him, and that set the stage for the most powerful of all popes.
Innocent III (1161-1216) was the first pope to claim that he was the supreme ruler, both natural and spiritual, of the entire world and every living thing. He was the first major manifestation of Antichrist, in the “midst” of the 70th Week of Babylon.(50) Hundreds of thousands of people died as a result of his orders. Even Catholic priests called him the Antichrist, and the Catholic Church was called Babylon. Innocent III ascended the papal throne on 8 January 1198, which was 818 years after the Edict of Thessalonica. Was that date the beginning of the Great Tribulation, the prophetic 1,260 days, the 42 months, and the “time, times and half a time”? Or was the beginning at the middle of his reign, the year 1207, 827 years after the Edict? For now, that remains a mystery.
Although Innocent III was a physically weak man, with constant health problems and little education, his mind was ruthless and his heart was cruel. He stated that no one was allowed to judge the pope, “even if he command what is evil.” He condemned Magna Carta and excommunicated “anyone who should continue to maintain such treasonable and iniquitous pretensions.” He proclaimed that, “Pope’s are not the Vicar of St Peter, we are the successors of Peter,(51) but not his vicar nor any man’s nor any apostle’s. We are the Vicar of Jesus Christ before who, every knee shall bow.” He called himself the “Universal Bishop” and the “Foundation of All Christianity.”
In 1199 Innocent III banned “unauthorised” translations of the Bible, to stop anyone who could not read Latin from seeing the scriptures. If there was anything the Roman Catholic Church did not want, it was the people discovering that nothing that was done inside their churches was actually found in the Bible, aside from what was written about Babylon.
In 1202 Innocent III’s Fourth Crusade began. It had been his obsession for many years. Instead of freeing Jerusalem of the Muslims, the Catholic soldiers blessed by the pope, destroyed Constantinople, which at the time was the greatest city in the world, and under Christian control, not Muslim. They plundered the city, raped even the nuns, and murdered anyone they wanted. The Roman Catholic Church claims that the crusade did not follow Innocent III’s intention, but some historians argue that the destruction of Constantinople had been his plan all along. If it was, it would not have been out of character.
Because of Innocent III’s ongoing spat with John Lackland, England was placed under an interdict that lasted for over six years. Every English church was closed until 1214. No services were held, even for Christmas and Easter. There were no marriage ceremonies, no funerals, and no baptisms. It was only when Innocent III persuaded the king of France to invade England, did John finally appease the pope, and the interdict was lifted.
In 1209 Innocent III launched the Albigensian Crusade (also known as the Cathar Crusade) against “heretics” whose only “crime” was to oppose the superiority of the Roman Catholic Church. To them, not surprisingly, Rome was Babylon, and Innocent III was the Antichrist. It turned into a twenty-year genocide of southern France. In one day, the entire city of Beziers was razed to the ground, with a death toll of over 20,000. Because it was not obvious exactly who was a Catholic and who was a Cathar, the soldiers were instructed to kill everyone, since, “God will know who they are.” From little babies, to Catholic priests in the action of performing the Catholic mass, everyone was killed. On that one day, Innocent III was responsible for more Christian deaths than all the pagan Roman emperors combined.
In 1215 the Fourth Lateran Council was controlled by Innocent III with an iron grip, and he passed more laws than all the popes who preceded him, and no bishop was brave enough to offer up a debate. He officially introduced the blasphemous doctrine of transubstantiation (which became doctrine in 1220), the supposed power of priests to literally bring Christ down from heaven and transform him into a wafer, which is then eaten. To oppose this was considered the same as opposing Christ himself. Was this doctrine the “end of sacrifice and offering” prophecy of Daniel 9:27?
Also at the 1215 council, Innocent III made the Roman Catholic Church’s denouncement of the Waldensians officially correct, that they were indeed heretics. Their crime? That they had their own translations of the Bible and realised what the Roman Catholic Church really was. They were either founded by, or helped by, one Peter Waldo (which was probably not his actual name), who was a wealthy trader from Lyon, France. In about the year 1170, Waldo desired to understand the scriptures, so he paid for translations to be made. When he was able to read the Word of God, he was horrified that what he had previously learned from Catholic priests was far from the truth. Wanting to spread the actual truth of the Gospel to others, he became a fearless preacher, and he openly called the Roman Catholic Church the Harlot of Revelation. Soon he and his followers were known as the Poor of Lyon, since they condemned the excessive riches of the Roman Catholic Church, and sought to live godly lives. Seeking to begin a reformation of the religious power, Waldo and his followers went to Rome in 1179 to meet with pope Alexander III. The result of the visit was that in the Third Lateran Council the Waldensian teachings were condemned, and thirty-six years later, under Innocent III’s orders, they were hunted down and burned at the stake.
In 1216 the Dominican Order began, and they were given control over the Inquisition, murdering millions, and making the church richer by looting their victim’s possessions and confiscating their land. Innocent III died that same year, when he was planning yet another crusade of pillaging and murder. Many of the popes who succeeded him shared his sins by building on his blasphemy and arrogance, but none matched his boldness.
One would think that the actions of Innocent III in ordering the deaths of so many people would have been widely condemned from his day until our day, but the opposite is the case. Innocent III is remembered not as a tyrant mass murderer, but as a champion of Catholicism. He is one of only two popes commemorated inside the United States House of Representatives (the other is his relative Gregory IX, who began the Medieval Inquisition).(52)
Innocent III was as literal a fulfilment of the Antichrist as there has ever been. His was a rule of terror. No pope has ever had as much blood on his hands. His control was absolute, from the lowest of the laity, to every king; all lived in fear of what he might do. But it is important to understand that the Antichrist is a spiritual entity in control of such men.
“By this you know the spirit of God: Every spirit which confesses Jesus Christ having come in the flesh, is of God; and every spirit which does not confess Jesus Christ having come in the flesh, is not of God. And this is the Antichrist which you heard is coming, and now is already in the world.”
1 John 4:2-3
After this spirit was manifest in Innocent III, it lived on in his successors, together with having the blood of his victims on their hands. This spirit will continue to thrive until the Second Parousia, when the Lord Jesus will destroy whoever happens to be sitting on the papal throne at that time, representing centuries of tyranny.
Thus, then, does the prophet set forth these things concerning the Antichrist, who shall be shameless, a war-maker, and despot, who, exalting himself above all kings and above every god, shall build the city of Jerusalem, and restore the sanctuary. Him the impious will worship as God, and will bend to him the knee, thinking him to be the Christ. He shall cut off the two witnesses and forerunners of Christ, who proclaim his glorious kingdom from heaven, as it is said: “And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.” As also it was announced to Daniel: “And one week shall confirm a covenant with many; and in the midst of the week it shall be that the sacrifice and oblation shall be removed,” that the one week might be shown to be divided into two. The two witnesses, then, shall preach three years and a half; and Antichrist shall make war upon the saints during the rest of the week, and desolate the world, that what is written may be fulfilled: “And they shall make the abomination of desolation for a thousand two hundred and ninety days.”
Hippolytus, Commentary on Daniel, 2, 39 (c AD 220)
But that king will not only be most disgraceful in himself, but he will also be a prophet of lies; and he will constitute and call himself God, and will order himself to be worshipped as the Son of God; and power will be given him to do signs and wonders, by the sight of which he may entice men to adore him. He will command fire to come down from heaven, and the sun to stand and leave his course, and an image to speak; and these things shall be done at his word, by which miracles many even of the wise shall be enticed by him. Then he will attempt to destroy the temple of God, and persecute the righteous people; and there will be distress and tribulation, such as there never has been from the beginning of the world. As many as shall believe him and unite themselves to him, shall be marked by him as sheep; but they who shall refuse his mark will either flee to the mountains, or, being seized, will be slain with studied tortures. He will also enwrap righteous men with the books of the prophets, and thus burn them; and power will be given him to desolate the whole earth for forty-two months. . . . Now this is he who is called Antichrist; but he shall falsely call himself Christ, and shall fight against the truth.
Lactantius, The Divine Institutes, 7, 17 & 19 (c AD 310)
He shall remove his kingdom into that city [Jerusalem], and shall sit in the temple of God, leading astray those who worship him, as if he were Christ.
Irenaeus, Against Heresies, 5, 25, 4
For whosoever does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh, is antichrist; and whosoever does not confess the testimony of the cross, is of the devil; and whosoever perverts the oracles of the Lord to his own lusts, and says that there is neither a resurrection nor a judgement, he is the first-born of Satan.
Polycarp, Epistle to the Philippians, 7 (c AD 110)
Footnotes
50. Almost every biographical source of this man presents a highly sanitised version of reality. Vicars of Christ (1988) by former Jesuit priest Peter De Rosa, reveals his true and monstrous nature, as with many other popes. Innocent III (Innocentius in Latin, meaning Harmless) was born Lotario dei Conti, from the powerful ancient family. Here was a man who claimed to head Christianity, to stand in the place of Christ, to insist that he should be worshipped as God, who once ordered the violent deaths of over 400,000 Christians whom he labelled “heretics” because they wanted to read the Bible in their own language, who ordered the Fourth Crusade, who annulled Magna Carta, who confirmed the blasphemous doctrine of Transubstantiation during the 4th Lateran Council that he ruthlessly controlled.
51. The evidence that Peter was the first pope is simply laughable. The earliest documentation they can present is from AD 354, some three centuries after Peter was meant to be overseeing the Roman Christians. We are supposed to believe that no other writer, in all that time, mentioned that Peter served as the bishop of Rome. There were many bishops in that time who would have used such documents, had they existed. Their evidence is the Liberian Catalogue, edited by a Jesuit named Bucherius in 1636:
“When Tiberius Caesar was reigning, our Lord Jesus Christ died, the two Gemini being consul, on the 8th day before the kalends of April. And after his ascension the Blessed Peter took up the episcopate. From that time by the succession of ordinations, who was bishop, how many years he presided or who was emperor. Peter 25 years, 1 month, 9 days. He was in the times of Tiberius Caesar and Gaius and Tiberius Claudius and Nero, from the consulate of Minucius and Longinus [AD 30] to that of Nero and Verus [AD 55]. However he died with Paul on the 3rd day before the kalends of July, the emperor Nero being consul.”
This states that Peter died in AD 55, which would place his supposed papacy as beginning in AD 30. We know that both Peter and Paul died in Rome in AD 67, so the document is totally inaccurate. If we subtracted from AD 67 the very precise 25 years, 1 months, 9 days, we come to AD 42, which was when Peter was imprisoned by Herod in Jerusalem (Acts 12:1-5). Paul and Barnabas did not begin their apostolic travels until around AD 48, and they were the first (Acts 13:1-2). Barnabas split with Paul and took Mark with him on an unknown apostolic mission in AD 49 (Acts 15:36-40), which was certainly to Rome. That was 18 years before Peter’s estimated death there in AD 67, so he could hardly have served 25 years as their bishop. The Liberian Catalogue is a poor invention. The actual documentation about Rome’s first bishops were recorded by Irenaeus, who recorded the first bishops up until his own day, in the late second century.
“The blessed apostles, then, having founded and built up the Church, committed into the hands of Linus the office of the episcopate. Of this Linus, Paul makes mention in the Epistles to Timothy. To him succeeded Anacletus; and after him, in the third place from the apostles, Clement was allotted the bishopric. This man, as he had seen the blessed apostles, and had been conversant with them, might be said to have the preaching of the apostles still echoing [in his ears], and their traditions before his eyes. . . . To this Clement there succeeded Evaristus. Alexander followed Evaristus; then, sixth from the apostles, Sixtus was appointed; after him, Telephorus, who was gloriously martyred; then Hyginus; after him, Pius; then after him, Anicetus. Soter having succeeded Anicetus, Eleutherius does now, in the twelfth place from the apostles, hold the inheritance of the episcopate. In this order, and by this succession, the ecclesiastical tradition from the apostles, and the preaching of the truth, have come down to us. And this is most abundant proof that there is one and the same vivifying faith, which has been preserved in the Church from the apostles until now, and handed down in truth.” [Against Heresies 3, 3, 3 (c.AD 180)].

52. There are 23 marble relief portraits, installed in 1950, that “depict historical figures noted for their work in establishing the principles that underlie American law.” Apart from the two popes, there is Alfonso X, Edward I, Gaius, George Mason, Hammurabi, Hugo Grotius, Jean Baptiste Colbert, Justinian I, Lycurgus, Maimonides, Moses, Napoleon I, Papinian, Robert Joseph Pothier, Saint Louis, Simon de Montfort, Solon, Suleiman, Thomas Jefferson, Tribonian, and Sir William Blackstone.
TWO WITNESSES
Revelation 11:3-6
(11:3) “And I will give to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, having been clothed in sackcloth.” (11:4) These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing in the presence of the Lord of the earth. (11:5) And if anyone wants to wrong them, fire proceeds from their mouths and devours their adversaries; and if anyone wants to wrong them, they must be killed in this way. (11:6) They have authority to shut the sky so that no rain may fall in the days of their prophecy, and they have authority over the waters to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every calamity as often as they want.
And I answered, and said to him, “What are these two olive trees at the right and left of the lampstand?” And I answered a second time, and said, “What are these two olive branches that drip down into gold pipes, from which the golden oil drains?”
And he answered me, and said, “Do you not know what they are?”
And I said, “No, my lord.”
So he said, “These two are the anointed ones who stand beside the Lord of all the earth.”
Zechariah 4:11-14
With very strong images, two men are portrayed taking on the world and the powers of darkness.(53) This was the first part of the vision of the Two Witnesses. The last part (11:4-14) concerned the Second Parousia and the Rapture.
It was the opinion of most Church Fathers that the Two Witnesses were to be two actual men who will walk the streets of Jerusalem, and prophesy against the state of the world. Tertullian was convinced that those two men would be the Old Testament prophets Enoch and Elijah, since both were recorded as not dying, but bodily taken to heaven (Genesis 5:24; 2 Kings 2:11). If they are to be actual men, then his reasoning makes sense, but the modern view discards it in favour of Moses and Elijah. Both of those prophets were known to execute the same type of miracles that were described by John, and more importantly, both were seen at the Transfiguration of the Lord (Matthew 17:2-3; Mark 9:2-4; Luke 9:29-30). It is doubtful, however, that Moses will be brought back to life, since he died at the age of 120, unlike Elijah who was taken away before death.
Enoch no doubt was translated, and so was Elijah; nor did they experience death: it was postponed, and only postponed, most certainly: they are reserved for the suffering of death, that by their blood they may extinguish Antichrist.
Tertullian, A Treatise on the Soul, 50 (AD 203)
While it sounds endlessly fascinating as to how two men from such vastly different times and cultures would go about threatening the entire world in their war against the Antichrist, a simpler answer is that the Two Witnesses represent the work of the True Church, and parallel the Seven Letters.
These are the two olive trees like “the wild and the cultivated” brought together (Romans 11:16-24). The 1,260 days(54) means that they will be active in the last half of the Babylonian Captivity. They have great spiritual power, and the miracles of Moses (authority over the waters to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every calamity as often as they want) and Elijah (authority to shut the sky so that no rain may fall in the days of their prophecy), but such power can be given to anyone. True boldness and spiritual authority to stand against evil can only come through the Holy Spirit, whether it was given to Enoch, Moses, Elijah, or anyone he wants to give it to.
Footnotes
53. This is in agreement with the Historicist view, that the Two Witnesses are symbolic of the church against the Papacy. Futurists will portray them as Moses (brought back to life) and Elijah, or Enoch (rarely with modern teachers), or just two other men. Idealists say that they represent the Church. Preterists are at a loss to explain them, since they fail to fit with their interpretation.
54. Historicists see “1,260 days” as 1,260 years, and while their teachers are in agreement that it means the duration of the Papacy, none agree when these years started and ended, which is a curious thing if their interpretation is correct. Futurists see the “1,260 days” as literal days, and the second half of the last seven years. Preterists see the “1,260 days” as the time period of the First Jewish War. Idealists see the “1,260 days” as symbolic of the entire Church Age.
SEVEN LETTERS’ PARALLELS WITH THE TWO WITNESSES
The following shows the parallels between the Seven Letters and Revelation 10:1-11:6: the Two Witnesses, the Little Book, and the Measuring of the Temple.
EPHESUS
“I know your works and your labour, and your patient-perseverance, and that you cannot bear wrong-doers, and that you tested those professing to be delegates and are not, and have found them to be deceitful” (2:2). And if anyone wants to wrong them, fire proceeds from their mouths and devours their adversaries; and if anyone wants to wrong them, they must be killed in this way (11:5). “I will give to him to eat from the tree of life which is within the paradise of God” (2:7). I took the little book from the hand of the angel and devoured it (10:10).
SMYRNA
“And the abuse of those calling themselves Jews but are nothing but a synagogue of Satan” (2:9). Do not measure the courtyard outside the Temple; cast it out, for it was given to the Gentiles (11:2). “Be trustful even to death, and I will give you the wreath of life” (2:10). And after the three and a half days the spirit of life from God entered into them and they stood on their feet (11:11).
PERGAMUM
“When Antipas, my trustful witness, was killed near you, where Satan resides” (2:13). And I will give to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy (11:3). “Make war with them by the sword of my mouth” (2:16). Fire proceeds from their mouths and devours their adversaries (11:5).
THYATIRA
“You permit the woman Jezebel, the one calling herself a prophetess” (2:20). “I will give to him authority over the Gentiles, and he will tend to them as a shepherd with an iron royal staff, as vessels made of clay are broken” (2:26-27). They have authority to shut the sky so that no rain may fall in the days of their prophecy, and they have authority over the waters to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every calamity as often as they want (11:6).
SARDIS
“You have a name that you live, and are dead” (3:1). And when they complete their testimony, the wild beast coming up out of the Abyss will make war with them, and will subdue them, and will kill them (11:7).
PHILADELPHIA
“The synagogue of Satan, those calling themselves to be Jews and are not, but they lie” (3:9). “I will make the one subduing to be a pillar in the Temple of my God, and he will never leave it” (3:12). Rise up and measure the Temple of God, and the altar, and those prostrating themselves in homage in it. And do not measure the courtyard outside the Temple; cast it out, for it was given to the Gentiles (11:1-2).
LAODICEA
“You are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. I recommend you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be wealthy” (3:17-18). And some from the peoples and tribes and tongues and Gentiles will look at their bodies for three and a half days, and they will not allow them to be placed in tombs. And those residing on the earth will be cheerful over them, and will be glad; and they will send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tortured those residing on the earth (11:9-10). “Lo, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will enter with him and I will dine with him, and he with me” (3:20). And they heard a loud voice from the sky, saying to them, “Come up here!” And they went up to the sky in a cloud, and their adversaries watched them (11:12).
For the sake of harmonizing the visions, the remaining of the Two Witnesses vision (11:7-9) will be discussed when it coincides with the other visions about the Second Parousia. Unlike what was promised by the Futurist “Secret Rapture” teaching, the True Church is meant to exist through the “Great Tribulation” Times of the Gentiles until the End of the Age.
